More than 28,000 vehicles a day rumble down Adamo Drive on Ybor City's southern edge, passing industrial buildings, strip clubs and the underbelly of an expressway.

They don't see the brick streets or smell the cigars. Even if they hear the streetcar bell, they have no idea where it's headed.

Soon, that's about to change.

An ambitious project is under way to paint a massive mural on the side of a steel fabrication plant. Once completed this summer, the 12,600-square-foot artwork promises to be the largest public mural in Florida and depict the heritage and culture of Ybor, said the artist, Michael Parker. It will welcome people to Ybor and transform the look of Adamo's west end.

"People are going to park their cars and just stare at this thing,'' said David Scott, chairman of the Ybor City Development Corp. "I fully expect it to become a tourist destination. It's very exciting.''

Parker hasn't revealed many details of the mural, partly to create some surprise but also because it's evolving. The Barrio Latino Commission overseeing Ybor's historic district recently issued a certificate of appropriateness for the project, and the city's public art program planned to sign off on the design this week.

Crews finished priming the building recently and hoped to start penciling in the design grid next week. Parker, along with about 30 college students and community members, will do the painting over the next two to three months.

Scott started working on the project more than two years ago after retiring from the Air Force. He wanted to do something for his community and considered Ybor, with its deep immigrant roots, representative of what it means to live in the United States.

"I looked at Ybor City and felt we could do much, much better. It's great that we have an entertainment district, but everything else had kind of withered away,'' he said. "I asked myself, 'What can we do to get the balance back?' ''

Scott, 57, raised $30,000 from public and private sources, including the city of Tampa's public art program, Kimmins Contracting Corp. and the Columbia Restaurant. In-kind donations from Sherwin-Williams, Kevin Schwiekhart, Corrosion Specialties Inc. and Ring Power Corp. covered the paint, prep work and equipment.

Organizers selected Parker to design and paint the mural, roughly 35 by 350 feet, on Fabricated Products of Tampa, at Adamo and 17th Street.

Parker, 34, has done several public murals, most notably two in Sulphur Springs' Rowlett Park and another in Ruskin, where he has a studio. He helped with the fundraising and formed a community art class at Hillsborough Community College's Ybor campus in January to work on the design.

Beyond the sheer size of the mural, the canvas itself poses challenges. The building is made of corrugated metal, rather than smooth concrete, and has a scalloped, irregular-shaped top. The artists will have to paint from scaffolding or cherry pickers because the wall starts 8 feet off the ground.

Scott described it as a "real heroic effort.''

Parker will spray, roll and hand-paint the mural using 70 to 80 coats of paint. It should last at least 15 to 20 years, thanks to a power washing and coat of primer applied to the original, rusted surface.

Long before sketching a design, Parker solicited input from the community. He led public workshops on mural-making and brainstormed ideas with different groups. To research a story about freedom fighter Paulina Pedroso, he bought a pair of vintage underwear from La France. Of course, he sampled a lot of Cuban sandwiches.

The class of 12 HCC students did much of the background work for the design. They interviewed Ybor business owners and residents and set up an online survey about Ybor and what it means to people. The idea of "embracing'' emerged as a common theme.

"We've done a lot of the research and saw the process,'' said Cassandra Thomas, a 23-year-old art student who wants to work in art therapy. "There's a sense of pride to be part of something that's bigger than yourself. It's more than just a class for a lot of us.''

The finished product will become a gateway to Ybor and go a long way toward improving the area's image.

"I used to have to tell people coming to my office to turn right at the strip club,'' said architect Larry Wilder, head of the city's art committee who owns a business on Seventh Avenue. "Now they can go to the mural and turn right.''

Welcome to Tampa postcard

You can't forget you're in Tampa, thanks to the postcard-inspired mural on Florida Avenue. The mural by Carl Cowden III went up in 2003 but was removed a few weeks ago because of old age. Motorists leaving downtown shouldn't despair. Cowden plans to repaint the mural on the same building at 1102 N Florida Ave. And this time it will go on a cement canvas, instead of brick, to extend its life. Each letter in the word Tampa has an iconic image of the city, from the Sulphur Springs water tower to the University of Tampa minarets. Over the years, plenty of locals have used it as a backdrop for photos and videos. Cowden appreciates all the attention it gets but cautions against trying to profit from it. Make posters or stationery of it, and he'll file a cease-and-desist order.

Dogedin mural

In Dunedin, pets aren't just part of the family. They are works of art. People paid $25 to $200 to have portraits of their four-legged friends painted on a mural outside Skip's Bar and Grill. Skip's owner and artist Anna Hamilton came up with the idea as a fundraiser for the Dunedin Doggie Rescue and ran out of space quickly. The Dogedin mural has about 600 dogs and cats of every size, color and breed, from collies to calicos. Most are mutts and about a third serve as a memorial for a pet that has died. People pass by daily to snap photos and point out their beloved pet. Hamilton, through the Murals for Mutts charity for pets, still has spots left on other murals around town, including one on the Gas Plant Antique Arcade in St. Petersburg, the Pinellas County Animal Services building in Largo and the Dunedin House of Beer. Hamilton also painted a small mural at Gaspar's Grotto in Ybor City.

"Exactly'' in Rowlett Park

Michael Parker was a young artist living in Sulphur Springs when he noticed a disturbing trend: Many of the neighborhood kids didn't go to school. So Parker reached out to six middle-schoolers and hired them to help create a mural at Rowlett Park's racquetball courts in 2004. The four boys and two girls looked to their own lives for artistic inspiration. The common denominator? All came from households led by women with no male role models. The 1,600-square-foot mural shows the students' mothers and grandmothers and the places they took them, from the playground to church. They named it Exactly because whenever people saw it, they asked, "Where are all the men?'' Their answer became the mural's title.

Old sewage tanks in Oldsmar

Take something ugly and make it beautiful. That was the thought behind a 2005 project to transform four former sewage tanks into art. Artists Carl Cowden III and Mike Massaro, with help from students and volunteers, painted the murals on tanks that had been turned into observation towers at the Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve in Oldsmar. The murals depict the natural landscape and wildlife found in the area, from possums and butterflies to alligators and armadillos. "Whenever I see the side of a building that's not painted in a highly visible location, I see that as a potential canvas,'' said Jay Goulde, executive director of the Outdoor Arts Foundation, which coordinated the project.

Plant City mural

Plant City is known for its strawberries — and its downtown mural. Ask locals where to go in town, and they'll probably suggest the mural on Collins Street. Just have a seat on a bench and look. It's that nostalgic. Paul Hetrick painted the 14- by 70-foot mural in late 2009 depicting historical people and iconic city landmarks, including the train depot. The Heart of Plant City mural replaced a nearby mural from the 1970s that was damaged in a 2005 arson fire and demolished a few years later. The new mural was finished in time for the city's 125th anniversary in 2010. Buried at its base is a time capsule scheduled to be opened for Plant City's bicentennial in 2085.

CENTRAL AVENUE MURAL

The 600 block of Central Avenue in St. Petersburg has become an oasis of independent, artsy stores and businesses. Now it has a mural to match its colorful personality. Graffiti artist Jared "Thirst'' Hernandez, 26, recently painted a mural on the side of Foolish Pride Tattoo, 648 Central Ave., next to the Pabst Blue Ribbon artwork. He started work on it about a month ago and hopes to finish next week. Inspired by Hernandez's interest in comics and action figures, the mural shows Marvel Comics character Cable and scenes from the comic book. The mural is the latest example of graffiti art in the district, said Rasta Geary Taylor, owner of 1 of 1 Customs at 659 Central Ave. He and Hernandez painted a Dr. Seuss mural on the back of his custom-painted sneaker and T-shirt shop and eventually hope to line the entire alley of the 600 block with graffiti-style murals. They also plan to paint the side of Wig Villa at 575 Central Ave. Farther east on Central, in the 2400 block, muralists painted Ghost of a Dead Samurai in 2010.

changing ordinance

Thank You Jesus Christ for Creating The Way of Your Word!
What do you feel now?
It's interesting as always.  Knowing the World is about to shift again.  that's what I do best.  Feeling the energy and getting in tune with it.  It's so strong and clear for me... and I have a wife who understands.  It's like the beginning of the end again!I always see the writing on the wall.
What is funny is that you are all ways writing on the wall and then pretending it was someone else.  It's really such a mad fun game you play.  Nothing you ever do is by accident.  you are driving home and remember seeing ken at the ranger house and stop in to chat.  you know he can help you do everything that you wanna do.
5.20 I think it's neat how I run off and type up a storm every time I start writing and sharing Your Word!
What is funny, is how much you enjoy this and share so much.  But then it is something you do so little these days.  Course we all think that will change soon.  it really depends on you and where you want to be next.  it's really such a interesting ride for you too.  You listen once in a while and then things happen once in a while.  it's almost like you never know if you wanna move forward or not.
I Wonder too some times.  here again I see so many things so clear and specific out in front of me.  That i know its not anything too complicated for me to do.  i see so many different pieces and places that I can be!
6.20 What is remarkable to us is how much of who you are you created.  Like the little dog at your feet now.  Clean and pretty.  He looks and acts like your cat, always attentive and responsive.  Remember that?  Back in your loft in NJ.  Sitting in your rocking chair, looking out the window at the trees and birds.  you were up high enough not to see the houses and cars.  but you remember when it was all trees.  You had been there all your life.  Like sharing with the infant in your office.  you could feel the connection, the calling, the power.   You always feel that
Free free, set them free... Free free, set them free... Free free, set them free... Free free, set them free... Sting on Pandora now 6.10pm
Kim called and said she would be late. I told her we needed to go out to dinner.  It was important and we needed to chat.... Word!
What is so powerful now than ever, is she knows you are ready.  things need to change.  change here, change everywhere.  it is really easy and powerful.  nothing to do but know you are ready now.  she will see it too.  It's come a long way and it needs to get done now or never.  it is so funny you write this now, as she is reading the same things.  And she knows it.  Th Power of the Word is not just a story.  It's all symbol, teaching a deeper more powerful truth than ever told.  When you remember that you designed this all YOURSELF, and created this moment now for you to see your thought.  Now here. . Red and white!
remember it's your dream.  you created it all, so you could see it now, and do things no one could ever do.  no one could ever imagine.  it is so beyond the conception of the truth and power of people.  this is your land.  You wrote the laws. and You can get around them.  The courts are there for you.  You file a claim because you need to be heard.  The rules need to change for this case.  and you can prove it.
it's your dream, you created it for you to express your own creation.  Your own truth, your own experience.  beyond all forms of reality limited to men.  it's about getting beyond these limits.  Taking your claim and making your stand.  It is a lot easier than you think.  all the players and pieces are in your hands
What you can do there with the portables, the land and local industry will be critical for the disasters coming south of you...
I always knew it would get crazy sooner or later.  And I asked you for the solution.   What I didn't know was how bizarre it would all be.  know we can build and ship something here in a flash while the rest of the universe wouldn't know where to start.  It feels like taking back our right to life from the crazies out there that want to profit from other people suffering.
What do you feel now while making it easy for people to work and produce will be their saving grace ... !
It's seeing people profiting from restoring the natural environment.  Competing with each other to grow bigger and better crops.  More production!
What do you feel now? sharing and knowing it's ready for you.
It is so weird.. . . i wonder what kim will say.  it's time for us to get a lot more serious about everything we are doing.  !
What do you feel now?
It's neat, i feel lucky
I Love You Dearest Loving Lord Jesus Christ.

Onondaga Nation - People of the Hills

Onondaga Nation - People of the Hills: HISTORY- Birth of a Nationby Oren Lyons
Over a thousand years ago on the shores of Onondaga Lake, in present day central New York, democracy was born.

The Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and the Mohawk people had been warring against each other and there was great bloodshed. These people (the 5 nations) had forgotten their ways and their actions saddened the Creator. The Creator sent a messenger to the people so that the five nations could live in peace. The messenger is referred to as the Peacemaker.

The Peacemaker carried the powerful words of peace to the five nations. The Peacemaker traveled in a stone canoe to show to these troubled people that his words are true. In order for the Creator's message to spread, the Peacemaker sought out the warring leaders of the people of the five nations. In searching for these people, the Peacemaker came upon a woman. This woman had no alliances but did provide shelter and food for the men as they passed to war upon each other. The Peacemaker told her about the message and that her actions were also saddening the Creator. After listening to the message she agreed to follow the message. The Peacemaker set aside a special duty for the women of the five nations (Clan Mother). The Peacemaker then traveled to all of the nations spreading his words of peace.

pictures and budget

Thank You Jesus Christ for Creating The Way of Your Word!
What is really weird about this?
I get it i get it.... it's me in the same place i have always been.  doing the same thing all over again.  i keep coming around the orbit to the same place over and over again. It is really kinda cool, as i could get it right maybe.  this time i realized how all the people i know interact with me as i excite them at some level.  Creating patents and new designs can excite anyone.  Creation is always exciting. . . and that's just what I do!
What did you write?
I I wrote this to the Fish Expert and Cad Guru who've helped me this far, as I knew they would know all about the pictures and budget (PDF). . . so, WHO ELSE would LOVE to see the research (DOC) too. . . and then I felt how Doug knew Justin over 10 years so Copied to him ... as he was the Leading Prayer at my wedding, Perfect Insight!  and then I added the Best Man and my Moms from my wedding too... WHO all know & love this project too. And I was just laughing WOW, how cool it is to be associated with such awesome people.... WHO will each just LAUGH at this crazy message from weird Eric who's at it again writing physco.... and also love every stitch i attached, as it might actually make sense. ;-)!
What did you do now?
I sent it to chuck and doug to see what they think.  i thought to send it everywhere, but never know if I'm totally crazy!  But I guess I've always been.  which makes me feel like i learned something and need to be more restrained.
What is interesting is how you feel complete now sharing your insights with someone.  You had to send that vibration out, as you know it bounces again and again... and you couldn't sleep and jumped up ready to get things done here.  Still now again you stop to attend another duty.
it is always another "duty."  you have always been very clear and dedicated.  Knowing your place and power...  like no one could ever interfere with where you are going... the power and clarity comes through so clearly.  everyone can see it.  everyone likes to see it.  you always feel so intimidating and inhibit yourself because of it.  and this is changing.  every day you change.  You grow and learn, sharing more and more each day
It is really kinda awesome sometimes, as i see and grow.  Like today watching battle star gallactica.  The four new scilons where all hearing the same song.  each one reciting the word as part of the daily operations dialog... and i didn't even notice!  Then kim told me the words to the song and played it to me again as we got into bed.
What a powerful experience you share with her.  always you both flow so easily together.  creating, learning, sharing, such power and truth you bring together.  no fear of the freedom and style you share.  talking about the generation and timing where the population first experienced the tv show, then discussing the deeper elements and sharing the understanding now again.
I Love You Dearest Loving Lord Jesus Christ.. . thank you for the truth and guidance through these next days as i see more of the clarity and focus coming through more easily. Amen.

Strategies that work include

Zest2Zeal: NMBeing #190 PISCES' JOURNEY:
Strategies that work include

(1) recognizing and accepting our vulnerabilities and sensitive nature

(2) realizing that self-empowerment and growth is both necessary and
inevitable

(3)acquiring strategies to protect ourselves and taking responsibility
to the best of our ability

(4) acquiring and using skills that help us transcend our vulnerability,
helplessness and feelings of inadequacy

(5) taking steps that give us a sense of self-esteem, self-confidence,
independence and power

(6) identifying and developing our gifts and offering them to the world

(7) Ultimately we have to find meaning and help by connecting with and
surrendering to a higher power. In the dimension of Spirit, we are
obliged to give up control, relax, listen and obey.

11.55pm things to do!
What do you need to do?
I woke up and saw 11.44 and tried to sleep. no luck so i finally grabbed a beer and headed into the office. 11.45 was the time on an email from john. As I hit send on the reply i saw 11.52
thinking i had things to do! and read, i opened up this zest posting and started to read. 11.59 now and i remembered to turn on the music.
What do you need to do?
I was thinking I had to visit some engineers and see about building something more. it was an important thing to do! I keep flashing into new designs and I connect to people who can see and understand what I mean. It's like first meeting chuck and knowing we had so much to do. Every second i meet someone -more and more comes together. Everyone is seeing stuff now. And kim wants me to get out more on my own
2/17/2012now moment 12.07am
What do you need to do? 12.05 the future was wide open
I was thinking to write more about what's happening!
What do you need to do?
it wwwas soo cool....  i keep seeing more and more as i learn and understand what i am doing.  the power is growing so fast as everyone is connected and we feel, see, know,,, I was thinking about what things to do first. . . and the next song comes on and i flash off again into another memory, another time, another place.... like i've been here before.  Shit i'm in the same place again.  I've not moved yet.  and everything is still connected and sitting exactly where it has always been.  like a pistol in the closet.  you know it's there.  you know how to use it.  Waiting, it sits... like it's alive waiting to jump out and boom!!!!   like a snake hiding in the dark...
What did you flash too?
It was everything together again.  nothing to do, but watch.  A spectator, watching it all come together.. all ready..  nothing more to do but take over.  boom!!!  no more lies... life has begun again!
What do you need to do now 12.17am... not another picture?  you already know what you are doing... you always knew.  we've just been there with you and you like watching us.  like someone there in the back seat, not saying a word.  back seat driver, as it all flows from your inspiration....  what did you say today... "we can put men on the moon, but we can not figure out how to feed our brothers."  Something so primitive and basic.  Family, companions, peers, working, loving, creating, COOPERATIVE. . . being together.  a  S O C I E T Y. . . . how could you ever miss such an opportunity!

No one there knows how to just be.
While you never learned how to play the silly games they have.... Being too much already.  just watching.  you always felt like the odd man out.  the spectator to life, not really living, but ready for anything, , , watching . . curious. . . waiting, wondering
I was thinking about things to do!
It is what you do... like the next song on the radio.  Your heart beats, and you get pumped up. . . and then just let it flow.  designing, creating, patenting, What do you need to do now?
I was thinking how i copied this line...   I started with a link from a list and then popped open a page to copy the read letter for you... it was the thing to do!
What do you Expect!   you always know what you need to do.  the door opens, and you get it done.  whatever it is?  shows up, needs fixing... it just happens for you... always has, always well.
like this moment again now, pumping up with us here;;; feeling this music and knowing the proof in the picture is as it always is.  you read and feel so much more into it, hearing the words you need.. knowing the truth in the pudding.  making it happen, watching it work.  everything in place, everything all set.
waiting wondering... feeling the love and light... knowing the place and the power.  it's where you are... and now you remember more.  knowing how we are all connected.  All ready.  Waiting to do what is right.  no more games.  this is our town.....  no one out there can interfere, we can close our doors.
I was thinking thing to do!
All matter and living light substance is ours to command, to take the shape of that which we desire in order to fulfill the Will of God on Earth.

What do you need to do?
As solar magnets, we can draw to ourselves all the necessary particles of energy from the Great Central Sun to manifest and precipitate whatever we require to serve humanity. Our motives must be come from a place of divine integrity, with no thought to the needs or wants of the lower self. We must allow ourselves to exist solely through the solar impulse of our I AM Presence.
The purity of our thought and feeling body will be the determining factor of whether or not we become masters of instantaneous manifestation!

Once a clear examination of our motives has yielded the purity of our intention, our eyes must be single, with laser sharp focus on that which we seek to manifest. One of the primary reasons we do not see the complete fruition of our visions and ideas is that we become easily distracted and lose focus on the ultimate goal. It is deceptively easy to place our attention on too many things at once, our scattered thoughts resulting in the loss of our singular divine focus. It is through the power and presence of developed FOCUS and CONCENTRATION that we can amplify our ability to manifest at will.
I was thinking thing to do!
Mastering Concentration for Instant Manifestation
What do you need to do?
What do you need to do?
I was thinking
Spiritual Level - We recognize that we are God manifesting another part of ourselves that exists within a body of God, we are all particles of the same energy.

Etheric Level - Once we have fully visualized our desire and made our invocation for its manifestation, we understand that it now fully exists on the etheric plane, ready to manifest.

Mental Level - Through mental discipline we keep our mind focused on the Immaculate Concept, the perfection of the desire we seek to manifest, our mind's eye remaining steady in the Light.

Emotional Level - As we maintain our enthusiasm, devotion and child-like faith in God and the Universal Laws, we draw forth the required forces of instant manifestation.

Physical Level - We experience the full materialization of that which we seek.

As we experience heightened levels of solar magnetism through the building of our Group Antahkarana and internal magnets, our relationship with the living light substance that makes up all life will shift into a paradigm of perfected co-creation.

Thank You Jesus Christ for Creating The Way of Your Word!
What did you do now?
It's really interesting as I am getting clear into my power more than ever. . . I'm blogging in the library again now, using one of the free-library-lender-laptops.  It's almost mystical as I could remember writing in high school wanting and dreaming of the space and time that I could be getting serious about who i am and what i do using the free resources of the universe like this.

I've always been in the same place doing the same things.  Present with what is, creating and engineering new ways to cooperate.  Here again I feel this awesome power and clarity where I could very easily be creating the thing that I am always about creating.  I feel the opportunity and actions that I need, as I can see the truth and plan before me.  I've really gotten a lot of flashes about what I can do.  It's really such a trip all the little pieces coming together like magic.

Today in class the professor said the same thing I've heard countless times.  Again about writing and tenure and making things very clear and specific for my research.  Not only did he answer the list of questions Tom gave me Tuesday, but also gave us a very clear outline for presenting our research topics in his class.  I always laugh about how I am always in the right place at the right time.  But this time, it connected better with every other aspect of myself.  It was all there done and clear.  Like somehow hearing these words, seeing them written on the whiteboard, and also on the paper in front of me made them more real than ever.  Then I also thought how he had gone online to show me what to look for in the library research site.  I've been there hundreds of times, and know where to find everything.  But still somehow he was clear and specific enough to fill some gap in things that I already knew.  I was ready t!

Diet and Pemphigus
In Pursuit of Exogenous Factors in Pemphigus and Fogo Selvagem
Ethel Tur, MD; Sarah Brenner, MD
Individuals with a genetic predisposition to pemphigus will develop the disease only when one
or more additional factors are present. The nature of these factors is as yet unknown, but our
starting point was that certain drugs (penicillamine, captopril, and rifampicin) are recognized
as such factors. Since some nutrients have chemical compositions similar to these known causative
drugs, these nutrients may act similarly and, therefore, nutritional factors should also be suspected.
As when drugs are involved, elimination of the inciting ingredients may be crucial for management
of the disease. This article discusses the possible role of nutritional ingredients in the disease
process of pemphigus, including fruit, leaves, roots, seeds, and even water. Possible causative candidates
are thiol, thiocyanate, phenols, and tannins. Arch Dermatol. 1998;134:1406-1410
Because the variability in the incidence and
age of onset of pemphigus cannot be explained
by genetics, environmental factors
are implied. Susceptibility to autoimmune
diseases is multifactorial1; not all
individuals with a proven susceptible genotype
will develop autoimmunity. In many
diseases, it appears that autoimmunity is
preceded by some environmental insult.
Tissue damage may be the key event that
either allows for release of sequestered antigens
from immunologically privileged
sites or causes local inflammation resulting
in lymphokine release and subsequent
expression of antigens, or both.
Sinha et al1 note that perhaps the biggest
challenge in the future will be the search
for the environmental events that trigger
self-reactivity.
It has been established that exogenous
factors in the form of drugs, in particular
thiol-containing drugs,2,3 play a role
in the induction of pemphigus. This points
to the possibility of finding other offenders,
such as food products with chemical
compositions similar to these drugs.4-9 We
suggest that diet factors are involved in the
pemphigus disease process and that, potentially,
morbidity can be reduced if these
factors are identified and avoided.
DIETARY FACTORS
IN PEMPHIGUS
Thiol
When a thiol group is included in the molecular
structure of a drug, the drug is capable
of inducing pemphigus. Thiol groups
are part of the molecular structure of certain
plants; therefore, when these plants are
ingested, they may have the same effects as
thiol-containing drugs. Indeed, 3 compounds
of garlic (allylmercaptan, allylmethylsulfide,
and allylsulfide) were shown to
induce acantholysis in vitro.5 Garlic belongs
to the Allium group of plants, as do
onion, shallot, chive, and leek, all of which
also contain a thiol group. In the mountainous
(Himalayan) zones of India there are
many wild species of Allium L, and these appear
at tribal markets.10 Evidence for involvement
of thiol-containing foods in autoimmunity
is provided by case reports
indicating induction of pemphigus by garlic7
and leek.6 Elimination of these foods
from the diet induced remission, and readministration
caused exacerbation.
Isothiocyanates (Mustard Oils)
A distinct group of thiol-containing plants
comprises those with thioglucosides—
isothiocyanate-producing glucosides (by

enzymatic hydrolysis). They are of the mustard family
of plants that includes 3200 species in 375 genera and is
of worldwide distribution.11 Mustard (Brassica nigra) is
a member of the Cruciferae family, as are horseradish,
winter cress, turnip, broccoli (which contains both mustard
oils, namely, isothiocyanates and allyl isothiocyanates),
radish, cabbage, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower.
The seeds of mustard (containing 30% fat) are
used in French mustard, spices, and oils, and seed and
root extracts yield allergenic mustard oils—isothiocyanates.
12 Depending on the chemical structure, the compounds
are immunologically reactive (allyl and benzyl
isothiocyanate) or irritants (phenyl isothiocyanate): they
may either cause antibody-mediated acantholysis or be
incorporated into the epidermis leading to nonimmunologic
biochemical acantholysis in a manner similar to thiolbearing
drugs.13
The caper family (Capparidaceae), a tropical relative
of the mustard family, is another source of thioglucosides.
12 Usually, several thioglucosides coexist in a single
plant, and they are distributed throughout the plant in
varying amounts during its growth cycle. Synthetic oil
of mustard contains allyl isothiocyanate as the principal
ingredient. Allyl isothiocyanate is widely used for flavoring
of food products, especially seasoned sauces. It
is an irritant to mucous membranes and produces blisters
if left in contact with the membranes long enough.14
Phenols
Pemphigus may be topically induced as well: pemphigus
erythematosus has been induced by allergic contact
dermatitis caused by tincture of benzoin,15 and contact
with chromate has also caused pemphigus.16 The possibility
of induction of pemphigus by contact with phenols
has been described.17 Some phenolic compounds such
as phenylisothiocyanate contain sulfur, and others do not.
Following our previous publications,4-9 we received several
letters from patients with pemphigus who experimented
with foods and experienced variations in the
symptoms of their disease with elimination or readministration
of phenol-rich foods.
Urushiol. The mechanism by which urushiol elicits allergic
contact dermatitis probably begins with covalent
binding of the pentadecylcatechols to skin proteins.18 A
similar reaction might be the first step in the sequence
of events leading to acantholysis. Plants containing urushiol
(39,59-pentadecylcatechol) belong to the Anacardiaceae
family that includes the genus Toxicodendron (poison
ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac), the most
prominent genus in causing allergic skin reactions. There
are many related cross-reacting species such as mango,19,20
pistachio, and cashew that belong to the same family.
Other Phenolic Compounds. Aspartame, an artificial
sweetener, is a phenolic compound, as are many other
food additives such as preservatives, colorings, and flavorings.
Sodium benzoate, tartrazine (yellow dye No. 5),
vanillin, eugenol, caffeic acid, vitamins C and E, and cinnamic
acid are all phenols. Cinnamic acid is present in
apple, grape, orange, pineapple, and tomato juices. Cinnamon
spice is derived from the inner bark of Cinnamonium
zeylanicum, the phenol-containing cinnamon tree,
and many other species of Cinnamonium are also used as
spices. Eugenol, for example, an oil distilled from
Cinnamonium green leaves, is used as a flavoring for sweets
and foods.
Pinene, another phenol-containing substance, is used
to flavor baked goods, beverages, candy, condiments,
chewing gum, and ice cream. It is also found in tomatoes,
potatoes, mangoes, and bananas. Phenol-containing
piperine constitutes 5% to 9% of the content of
black pepper. Firewoods used for smoking and grilling
foods are another source of phenol. Ingested phenolics
are secreted in the milk and therefore appear in cows’ milk.
For example, gossypol is a phenolic constituent of cottonseed,
and when cows are fed cottonseed, this fatsoluble
compound appears in all the milk-fat products
made from those cows’ milk. Indole is another phenol
found in milk.
Tannins
Tannins are naturally occurring plant polyphenolic compounds
with considerable biologic activity. The astringency
of many fruits during the early part of growth is
due to high tannin content that declines as the fruit ripens.
Certain woods, root materials, barks, leaves, and even
hairs are also sources of tannin.
Previously, we pointed out the possible role of tannins
in the induction or promotion of pemphigus.8 Some
of the possible effects of tannins are listed below:
Precipitating interaction with proteins Alveolar macrophage stimulation
Interaction with drugs Platelet activation
Effect on nutrition Enzyme inhibition
Release of neutrophil chemotactic factor Metal ion deprivation
There is also evidence suggesting that tannins inhibit copper
utilization.21 Interestingly, the well-known pemphigus
inducer penicillamine is a chelating agent for copper.
Polyphenols induce apoptosis.22 Tannins also induce
binding of IgA paraprotein to red blood cells in a manner
analogous to tanning (waterproofing and preserving
animal skins to make leather) with phenolic plant extracts.
Tannins react with structures on or in the red blood
cell membrane.23 Tannin is frequently used as a crosslinking
agent,24 and similar cross-linkage in the epidermis
may possibly be the mechanism through which these
compounds induce pemphigus. Similarly, the first step
in drug-induced acantholysis involves binding of the drug
to the cell membrane.
Tannic acid has often been used in electron microscopy
as a stain for carbohydrate-rich cell surfaces. Tannic
acid stains the cell surface and intercellular material
in squamous epithelium and the desmosomes.25 Tannins
may activate platelets and are implicated in the
epithelial injury of bronchi by cotton dust. Some are carcinogens,
linked to nasal sinus cancer in woodworkers,
squamous cell carcinoma of the oral mucosa, and gastrointestinal
malignancies. Tannin has been shown to
produce a cytotoxic effect on human peripheral blood
lymphocytes in vitro, although this effect is dependent
on increasing concentrations and time of exposure.26

Other factors affecting tannin activity include the
steric structure of both the tannin and the protein, absorption,
and the composition and size of the protein on
which the tannins act. Temperature, pH, and the presence
of metal ions, calcium, and other chemical compounds
will also influence tannin activity.
Intake of Tannins. Examples of Foods Containing Tannin.
Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), also known as
manioc, mandioca, Brazilian arrowroot, and yucca, is an
important dietary staple in many forms for more than 500
million people in South America, Africa, and Asia.27 Cassava
roots and leaves contain cyanogenic and noncyanogenic
glycosides. Cassava leaves (both red and white
varieties) also contain condensed tannins. The tannin content
of oven-dried (70°C for 3 days in an air oven) cassava
leaves is from 0.2 to 3 g/100 g, depending on the
variety of cassava, and that of blanched leaves (100°C for
5 minutes) is 0.15 to 0.22 g/100 g.28
Mango also contains high amounts of tannin in the
pulp and skin, though this varies with the different kinds
of mango. India is the largest producer of mango, with
over 60 varieties grown there. The cashew tree produces
apples (not a true fruit botanically) in addition to
the nuts, and these apples are rich in tannins and are used
to make juice and alcoholic drinks in Brazil.
The guarana plant is a perennial climbing shrub
native to Brazil and other wooded Amazon regions. In
recent years, products manufactured from guarana have
been imported into the United States. The fruit is reddish
and contains glossy brown seeds. Some Indian
tribes grate fresh seed and swallow it with water, and
some make a fermented drink. Sometimes it is dry
roasted and then ground with cassava. This mixture of
2 high-tannin foods might have important implications.
The greatest use of guarana presently is as a soft drink,
which is imported to the United States. Guarana contains
a high caffeine level as well as tannin. The total
tannin content of air-dried guarana is 12.1% (proanthocyanidins
and prototannins).29 The seeds before any
treatment contain 6% tannin.
Fruits such as the kola nut, betel nut, black walnut,
raspberry, cherry, cranberry, and blackberry are all
high in tannin content. Avocado, banana, apple, and pear
are also rich in tannins, as are peach, persimmon, eggplant,
and grape skins. Coffee and cocoa seeds and the
roots of ginger, ginseng, and garlic are tannin rich, as are
the leaves of cassava, tea, mate´, and rosemary, the stems
of vanillin, and the shells of carob. Provisions such as beer,
wine, and soft drinks contain tannin additives. Tannin
is also added to candy, ice cream, baked goods, and even
nutritional supplements.
Stimulants and Masticatories. Certain plants that are
used for recreational and social ingestion and also as aphrodisiacs
and medications are rich in tannins (Table 1).
To this category belong the guarana from Brazil, betel nut
or areca nut (Areca catechu) from Malaya, which is popular
in India and in many other countries in that region
and in South Africa, and the kola nut from west Africa.
The appeal of exotic products has led to their spread to
North America as well, where they are now sold in sundries
shops and grocery stores. Guarana and kola nut are
also rich in caffeine and are used as stimulants.30 Chewed
betel nuts release tannins and thiocyanate. Immature nuts
contain 38% to 47% tannin, mainly polymerized leukocyanidins,
but the percentage decreases as the fruit matures,
and processing reduces the level to 8% to 15%.
Betel nut addiction afflicts at least 10% of the human
race.30 The betel quid is a package of fresh betel leaf
(Piper betle vine), the undersurface of which is smeared
with lime, containing pieces of betel nut and tobacco.
Spices are sometimes added too, as well as mustard. The
leaves that are used for chewing contain 1% to 1.3% tannin
and other phenols. The leaf yields 0.62% to 2.4% volatile
oil, which is 75% phenolic.30
The nut itself, aqueous extracts of it, and specific
constituents in the nut can be mutagenic and carcinogenic.
31 Several phenolics from the chewed plant products
can generate free radicals that can exert a cytotoxic
effect on the oral mucosa.32 It is a common practice to
keep pieces of the nut or betel quid in the mouth for prolonged
periods of time. Betel nut constitutes 50% of the
betel quid by weight, and a person may consume the
equivalent of 20 to 30 nuts and 200 leaves of betel vine
per day.
One method of preservation of the fresh betel nuts
involves blanching them in boiling calcium chloride. The
calcium (lime) component of the betel quid may take part
in pemphigus pathogenesis because the reaction of pemphigus
autoantibodies is enhanced by calcium supplementation.
Another ingredient of the betel quid, katha, is derived
from the heartwood of the cutch tree (A catechu),
and contains 11.7% to 14.2% tannin. It is a potent tanning
agent; 0.45 kg of cutch is equal to 3.2 kg to 3.6 kg
of oak bark for tanning purposes. It is also used as an
antioxidant in vegetable oils. An aqueous solution of A
catechu bark containing catechin and tannin, prepared
as a tincture or powder, has been used in the United States
as an astringent coloring in liquors, soft drinks, ice cream,
candy, and baked goods.
The expression of antigens that are markers of epithelial
differentiation may be regulated by substances such
as retinoic acid or calcium. Moreover, these antigens may
be involved in cell-to-cell adhesion in the epidermis.33
Thus, the same food compounds that play a role in car-

cinogenesis of the mouth may play a role in cell-to-cell
adhesion leading to the development of pemphigus. However,
a combination of factors is needed: carcinogenicity
has been shown to occur as a result of chewing a mixture
of pepper leaf, betel, and lime but not the betel nut
without lime.30
Interestingly, chronic exposure to cashew nut oil has
been shown to cause oral carcinoma in women who refrain
from tobacco and betel nut habits.34 In addition, oral
submucous fibrosis, a precancerous condition, is prevalent
among cashew workers in south India.35 Chromosome
breakage observed among betel nut chewers has
been attributed to the joint action of betel nut–derived
alkaloids, polyphenols and/or tannins, and nitrosamines
in the saliva.
Kola nuts (Cola nitida and Cola acuminata, family
Sterculiaceae) were carried to America from Africa with
the slave trade in the 17th century30 and spread due to
the reputation of the seeds as stimulants. Tannin levels
in C nitida are 3.9% to 4.4%, and total polyphenol levels
are 6.7%, particularly catechol and epicatechol. Kola nuts
are consumed fresh wherever they are grown throughout
the world, and aqueous extracts or concentrates are
used as flavorings in soft drinks, particularly with extracts
of coca leaves.
Nuts such as peanuts and pistachios may contribute
to pemphigus induction because people who eat them
have a habit of sucking the shells. These shells have high
tannin content.
Drinks. Tannin is the main component of tea,36 and
coffee also contains a substantial amount of tannin.37 Mate´,
also called yerba mate´, Brazilian tea, or Paraguay tea, is
a tealike beverage popular in many South American countries.
It is brewed from dried leaves of an evergreen tree,
Ilex paraguarensis, and contains caffeine (1%-1.5%) and
tannin (7%-11%). The plant grows wild in southern Brazil,
where pemphigus is endemic in the Parana and Paraguay
river basins.38
Fruit juice, beer, wine, and liquor are all sources of
tannin. Tannins are used in the clarification of wine and
beer. Distilled liquor contains spices and flavoring agents
such as vanillin and cinnamon that contain tannins. But
the most intriguing issue is water. Possible constituents
and effects of water have been discussed in detail in a previous
publication.9 South American pemphigus foliaceus
(endemic pemphigus, fogo selvagem) affects individuals
of all ages and has a familial prevalence where it
is endemic in areas of Brazil. This has prompted a search
for environmental factors.33
Most patients with fogo selvagem live in close proximity
to rivers. Many of these rivers contain high levels
of tannin caused by decomposing leaves and other vegetable
matter from the lush surrounding forests. Along
these rivers, fogo selvagem occurs in regions where the
weather is hot and humid. These conditions are needed
for tannins to decompose, fitting our hypothesis that tannins
in the water are an important factor in pemphigus.
The number of new cases of fogo selvagem is highest
at the end of the rainy season and lowest during the
dry summer. Rainfall causes a rise of the waters; large
quantities of organic materials are then carried by the
stream, and the amount of tannins dissolved in the water
increases. Furthermore, variations of annual rainfall
result in differences in the tannin content, and this may
account for the observation that new fogo selvagem cases
occur in clusters.39
A possible lead toward a means for controlling pemphigus
lies in the fact that chlorination of water results
in the formation of the hypochlorite ion that combines
with phenolic compounds even in high dilutions. This
might account for the disappearance of fogo selvagem following
urbanization, which usually involves treating of
the water.
Spices. Spices have a high tannin content, ranging
from 0.12 g/100 g to 1.26 g/100 g (Table 2). Spices of
the Umbelliferae family (ajowan, coriander, and cumin)
and black pepper have the highest content of tannin. All
over India, where pemphigus is prevalent, spices constitute
an important part of the daily diet.40 Among spices,
red chillies account for the highest daily tannin
consumption by individuals in India, followed by coriander,
cumin seeds, black pepper, and garlic. It is noteworthy
that patients showing positive skin-prick test results
to fresh fruits and vegetables also exhibited positive
skin-prick reactions to spice (mustard included).41
Calcium ions are necessary for the reaction of tannins,
tannins’ action resulting in elevated intracellular calcium
ion concentration. Interestingly, dry ginger, ajowan,
and asafoetida, which are spices with high tannin
content, also have high calcium levels.41
Food coloring. Several food coloring products have
high tannin content. Mangosteen, a tropical fruit that originated
in Southeast Asia, was introduced into the Americas
centuries ago. Its skin contains 13% tannin and is used

as a coloring for food. The use of the catechu bark as
food coloring was discussed earlier. It is also used as an
antioxidant in vegetable oils.
Nutritional Supplements. Several popular nutritional
supplements contain high concentrations of tannins.
Some preparations are bark extracts containing
proanthocyanidins and other polyphenols. There are
also grape seed extracts containing flavonoids, tea extracts
with high levels of tannins, and mixtures of
extracts with high tannin levels.
CONCLUSIONS
In summary, inferences that diet plays a role in pemphigus
induction may be drawn from a wide variety of facts:
(1) The molecular structure of many food ingredients is
similar to that of known pemphigus-inducing drugs. (2)
Case reports6,7 indicate the connection. (3) Tannins and
phenols are known to interact with proteins. (4) Seasonal
variations in pemphigus incidence coincide with seasonal
tannin variations in diet. (5) Yearly variations in pemphigus
outbreaks coincide with yearly tannin variations.
(6) Incidence of fogo selvagem drops as populations move
into urban areas with chlorinated water supplies.
Finding the exogenous stressors is the first step toward
their elimination. The second step is unfolding the
sequence of events and the interaction between these
stressors. The task is enormous and includes many variables,
as even changes in the mode of preparation of the
same foods might eliminate the deleterious effects of certain
constituents.
We suggest that foods containing thiol, phenolic
compounds, and polyphenols have a role in pemphigus.
But which of the multitude of these compounds are involved,
their mode of action, and under what conditions
their effect is exerted still remains to be unveiled.

Food Triggers for Pemphigus | eHow.com

Food Triggers for Pemphigus | eHow.com: Foods Containing Tannins

Tannins can be found in a variety of foods and beverages. Fruits and vegetables containing tannins that people with pemphigus should avoid are bananas, raspberries, blackberries, apples, pears, cherries, mangoes, cranberries, persimmons, grape skins, avocados and eggplants.

Other tannin triggers are black walnuts, kola nuts, cocoa seeds, black pepper, garlic, ginger, cumin, rosemary, coriander, ginseng, yucca and arrowroot.

Coffee, some teas, soft drinks, beer and wine are among the drinks that contain tannins and could trigger pemphigus.

Foods Containing Isothiocyanates

Isothiocyanates, which are mustard oils found in many types of vegetables, could cause a pemphigus outbreak in people with the disorder. Vegetables in this class are broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, turnip, mustard, brussel sprouts, winter cress, radish and horseradish.

Some seasoned sauces contain synthetic mustard oils for flavoring, which could irritate mucous membranes in people with pemphigus.

Foods Containing Thiols

Onions, garlic and leeks are thiol-containing foods that can trigger an outbreak or flare-up of pemphigus. These foods are part of the Allium group, which also includes chives and shallots. Foods containing thiols may cause blisters and should be eliminated from the diet if they are suspected as a trigger of pemphigus.

Foods Containing Phenols

Phenols are another trigger for pemphigus and can be found as cinnamic acid in fruit juices and flavorings in ice cream, baked goods, candy, condiments and beverages. Pinene is another common type of phenol that is found in potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, mangoes and black pepper.

Phenols can also be found in foods that are smoked or have a smoked flavor, and in milk and other dairy products from cows that feed on cottonseed.

PINK FLOYD LYRICS - One Of My Turns

PINK FLOYD LYRICS - One Of My Turns: This is just a passing phase
Just one of my bad days
Would you like to watch T. V.?
Or get between the sheets?
Or contemplate the silent freeway?
Would you like something to eat?
Would you like to learn to fly?
Would you like to see me try?
Would you like to call the cops?
Do you think it's time I stopped?
Why are you running away?

Deductive/predictive tracking goes like this: Locate a clear footprint left by an animal you're trailing—a so-called hot track. Make an educated guess, based on the animal's previous behavior, about where the animal would probably have gone next. Proceed to that spot. Look for more tracks. If you find no tracks - if the trail runs cold - return to the last hot track, make another educated guess, and repeat. Using these steps, you can follow your wild self as it instinctively migrates toward your perfect career:

Thank You Jesus Christ for Creating The Way of Your Word!
Grab a pen and make a list of every time you remember being utterly, happily absorbed in an activity.
I feel this way when I do Ritual, when I bike, and whenever I do something that my wife encourages.  Of course the last time that I did Ritual, she encouraged me to do that too.  It was just awesome of course, with the full moon as well.  Now to think about my history of when I get totally "absorbed" and I think about doing some engineering and how it would always totally fill me with passion and desire to complete it all.  I now feel like it had more to do with the deadline.  It seems whenever I have to get something done "now, or sooner."  I remember doing some class assignment and being up late at night or deep into the research and totally loosing track of time.

I also see that whenever I first start biking down the street.  Those first few minutes riding off always set me into another space.  Like falling into the twilight zone, completely out there and not in touch with anything.  That's always sorta exhilarating!  I also noticed this over the weekend working in the yard.  It wasn't so much the work, but more that I was getting something done for my wife and family.  Interesting too whenever she would bring me water or step out and say how great things looked I would swell-up excited to do more and more.  Similarly, I've noticed lately how she relaxes more and more with the TV and of course I only want to be with her.  But then I don't get anything done, and simply do not want to.  I've been trying to get her away from the box, and find myself wanting to join her there anyway.  It seems more like an addiction, or a useless drug.  That sucks!
To predict the next likely step for your inner animal, scan your environment for conditions that seem likely to foster that happy state of absorption, but are just outside your regular routine. Try an activity within that sphere to see if it's a hot track.
I think this is an interesting exercise.  Yesterday I got all excited writing her in the morning after one of her friends invited us to do something.  I had to send the note to her, and then got into writing as well to see if there was more we should plan together or whatever.  I told her how much I needed her to support and encourage me, and how adrift I felt with the TV taking too much of our time.  I know she gets full of excitement and joy in art, reading and writing deep into some passion she has.  I try to encourage this and always remember when we made something with feathers, she was as excited with it as I was. . . and we both created something really cool.  I've tried to get her into the garden or into something else like this again . . . but we stopped doing yoga, and haven't biked or bladded together in years, where the TV toke over.

After my note, she took me for a walk in the park as soon as she got home last night.  That was great!  But we've still not found much else to get us out and excited.  Like we spent one day working on the RV.  We did pick a few hundred potatoes together, but that was obviously a chore for her!
emotions like boredom, hopelessness, anger, or anxiety mean the trail's gone cold.
I guess I noticed more how she gets bored.  I noticed that is what happens to me as well.  I simply get bored with whatever I'm working on.  It really annoys me.  Like when working in the yard last week.  I felt like I had dragged her out to look at what I did, and it was no big deal . . . so I stopped.  There is still a big mess out there everywhere - - another half-done project like the million others scattered around the yard where she simply has no interest!
Obvious clear hot tracks such as enjoyment, fascination, or any heartfelt desire
I'm not sure where I can find these now?  She seemed kinda annoyed with me last night, saying that I was codependent and should not rely on her to find my own peace and power.  That seems so backwards and weird.  You would think that she would simply encourage me to get rich and famous with some patent or publication so we could hire people to finish our yard work or rebuild the RV or whatever else we want.  I mean, if she recognized her power and gave me a clear focus to bring us the success and wealth we need.  I mean wouldn't that just be the easiest thing to do!
What do you need to do?
I was thinking about how excited I would get speaking to some professors in business and that I needed to go visit them, and see if I could get my clarity and focus again...
I Love You Dearest Loving Lord Jesus Christ.
